Building Review-Directory Coverage for AI Search
Claim review-directory profiles and collect real reviews for broad answer-engine coverage
Definition
A tactic that claims product profiles on software review directories and collects genuine customer reviews so answer engines have a third-party source to cite. It is the review-specific branch of Building Product Information Surfaces for AI Search, not a replacement for owned buying pages, community evidence or an owned review site built from social mentions.

Claim profiles on G2 and Capterra, then ask real customers to review the product. In Borja's snapshot of 100 buy-intent questions across five answer engines, review directories were the only third-party source category cited by every surface. G2 appeared in 161 of 500 answers: 70 Perplexity, 32 Google AI Mode, 26 ChatGPT, 23 Google AI Overview and 10 Gemini answers. Capterra appeared in 34 Perplexity and 22 ChatGPT answers.
How to apply
- Fits business software with real customers who can leave truthful reviews; it is not a pre-customer acquisition tactic.
- Choose the directories that appear in the target surface's own citation scan rather than assuming the same directory mix across engines.
- Track profile completion and review growth separately from citations with Measuring AI Search Visibility as Crawl, Citation and Click.
- Pair third-party reviews with Answering Buying Questions on Owned Pages for AI Search because vendor pages were a separate source bucket.
- Use Building an Owned Review Site from Social Mentions only as a separate experiment: an owned domain does not inherit a directory's third-party standing.
Limits
- The citation counts are one US-English, non-personalized snapshot and do not prove that claiming a profile or adding reviews causes citation.
- The source does not report profile requirements, review-request conversion, moderation, cost or the minimum review count needed.
- Only genuine customer reviews fit this tactic; fabricated or incentivized reviews may violate directory rules.
