Testing a Transformation-Led Paywall
Test visible before-and-after value, a default plan and a discounted exit offer as one paywall variant

Rebuild the paywall around a clear before-and-after image, select the preferred plan by default and offer quitters a 30–60% discount. After 11 days, this fourth Kairo paywall experiment produced a reported 2.5× conversion lift and became the main paywall. The transformation matters because users buy the version of themselves on the other side of the app rather than the app itself.
How to apply
- Fits a consumer subscription app whose outcome can be represented honestly in one before-and-after image; start with Mobile App Onboarding and Paywall when the route from problem to offer is still unclear.
- Implement the variant through a remotely configurable paywall layer such as Superwall or RevenueCat so it can be compared without bundling unrelated product changes.
- Separate the transformation image, default selection and exit discount in later tests; the reported 2.5× result combines all three.
- Judge the variant on download-to-paid, refund, retention and renewal outcomes, not paywall conversion alone.
Limits
- The post gives no traffic, baseline rate, assignment method, statistical uncertainty or downstream retention and refund data.
- The 2.5× result cannot be attributed to any one of the three changes.
- Before-and-after imagery and discounted exit offers must remain accurate, clearly priced and compliant with current store and consumer-protection rules.
