Reclaiming Unlinked Brand Mentions

Find pages that already name the brand and ask their publishers to add the missing link

Definition

A backlink-reclamation tactic for cases where a publisher already chose to mention the brand but omitted its link. It starts with existing recognition rather than cold persuasion and belongs before harder outreach in the SEO queue.

Search roundups, newsletter archives, Substack posts, forum recommendations, podcast or YouTube show notes and customer “tools we use” pages for the brand name without a link. Contact the publisher as a correction to an existing mention rather than a request for a new endorsement. Acceptance should be higher because the editorial decision to mention the brand has already happened.

How to apply

  • Fits a brand with prior coverage; a new product with no mentions should start with Seeding a New Domain with Relevant Directories or targeted outreach.
  • Verify that the mention is positive, accurately refers to your product and sits on a relevant live page before asking.
  • Track discovered mentions, requests, accepted edits and retained links separately, then move to Replacing Dead Competitor Links for another correction-led path.

Limits

  • The source provides no search method, sample size, acceptance rate or evidence that reclaimed links changed rankings or revenue.

  • Some publishers deliberately leave mentions unlinked or apply nofollow; the mention is not an entitlement to ranking credit.
