Pruning SEO Pages by Search Performance

Use impression-click combinations to delete or re-optimize pages, then regroup them by topic

Definition

A cleanup process that sorts an existing site's pages by their Google Search Console impression-and-click combination to delete or re-optimize them, then regroups the survivors into topic hubs and internal links.

Perspectives

Nicholas Dulait (2026-08-20, X)

Nicholas Dulait removed 30% of all pages from the small B2C app Crumb and grew monthly clicks from 1,500 to 15,000. The work was done manually over two months, and how much came from deletion, keyword re-optimization, or semantic silos cannot be separated.

For pages with almost no impressions and zero clicks over the last 3 months, rewrite them if there is a real target query and delete them if there is not. A deleted URL gets a 301 redirect to the closest relevant page, sending it to the homepage only when nothing fits; for pages with high impressions but few clicks, fix the title, H1, first 100 words, slug, and meta description to match the query that is actually driving the impressions.

Only after the cleanup, group the surviving pages into topic-based semantic silos, giving each cluster a hub and dense internal links. For small sites with only 12 pages, creating new pages comes before pruning.

Charlotte Schmitt (2026-09-07, X)

Charlotte Schmitt deleted about 200 thin AI-written pages with low-quality backlinks at the end of 2025 and kept only a few dozen worth maintaining. She reports that none of the prior year's hundreds of AI-written SEO pages reached Google's top 10; after the cleanup and a shift to reviewed, evidence-grounded pages, monthly Google visitors rose from about 1K to nearly 4K and search's share of new signups rose from 15% in spring 2026 to 36% so far in September. The combined change does not isolate deletion from the replacement content or other acquisition effects.

How to apply

  • Fits an existing site with pages piled up over time and at least three months of per-page Search Console data; the one case is a small B2C app, not a large publisher, so scale is unproven either way.
  • Not for a site with only a handful of pages — at 12 pages Nicholas Dulait puts creating new pages before pruning; start there with SaaS SEO Page Type Priority or Building SEO Pages from Search and User Evidence.
  • Assumes you can do the work manually over weeks and maintain 301 redirects. Deletion, re-optimization and silos ran together in the case, so if you want to know which one moved clicks, stagger them per cluster and log impressions and clicks.
  • Read Google Search Console first for the export; when adding new topics to the surviving clusters, pick them by SaaS SEO Page Type Priority; the rest of the landscape is in SEO.

Limits

  • The 10x click increase is one site's self-report, and it did not isolate the individual effect of deletion, re-optimization, and internal-link changes.
  • The second case combines deletion, evidence-rich replacement pages, editorial review and ongoing market demand, so its near-4x visitor change cannot be attributed to pruning alone.
  • The average-score model — that low-quality pages across a whole site drag down the ranking of other pages — is the author's explanation, not a published Google evaluation formula.
  • The numeric thresholds for "almost no impressions," "high impressions," and "low clicks," along with methods to control for seasonality, indexing status, and brand queries, are not provided.
  • The source sentence On Crumb this was [XX] pages contains an unfinished editing marker, so it was not used as evidence.
  • ChatSEO / CSEO had no canonical URL in the source, so no tool page was created, and the accuracy of the prompts shown was not verified.
