Choosing an International SEO Domain Strategy
Choose a global domain structure from existing authority and local-market fit before migrating
Definition
An international-domain decision separates three choices: retaining the current domain with a language subdirectory, adding a language-specific subdomain, or launching a separate domain for the target market. A later domain migration is a second decision because it also requires authority-transfer and redirect work.

Use a language subdirectory such as example.com/en/ when the company and existing domain already have recognition and authority outside Korea. Consider a separate domain when the current name, country-code domain or pronunciation looks unsuitable to people in the target market, even if that choice gives up some early advantage.
Do not switch an established domain impulsively or assume Google will transfer everything automatically. Avoid the migration when possible; when it is necessary, plan redirects and authority transfer over a long period and get specialist help rather than discarding years of accumulated authority.
How to apply
- Fits a Korean service choosing its first durable English-market web structure, before publishing the localized page set.
- Evaluate naming and domain fit with target users separately from current search authority; neither factor alone decides the structure.
- If a migration is unavoidable, complete bot-readable page checks and preserve a measurement baseline before changing URLs.
- Choose target-market queries with market-specific keyword research after the domain direction is fixed.
Limits
- The source gives no migration timeline, redirect map, hreflang implementation, traffic-recovery curve or controlled comparison among subdomains, subdirectories and separate domains.
- The reported growth from fewer than 5,000 to 500,000 monthly clicks is self-reported and is not attributed to this domain decision alone.
- “Domain Authority” is used as the author's practical label; the source does not define a specific metric or establish how Google transfers it.
